Roller derby!

I got to go to the roller derby again tonight. There is something about it that just draws me in. It's not just the sport itself--it is the whole culture that surrounds it. You wouldn't think it would have a positive vibe, but it does, and in a big way.

It is a blast--I bet it is something you would really enjoy. Maybe there are some teams in your area.

there is a guy at work whose gf skates--he's invited me, I've just never gone. I was thinking of learning how to do this myself at one point--I think I may be too old for that much pain!

I have two or three LJ friends, not connected to one another, who are somewhat active at one level or another with roller derby in relatively big cities. They skate, or work in publicity, or something. One's a team co-captain in a big city. There's something so powerful about women just being tough and going for it. They're not all slender (being blocky is helpful, in fact), they're willing to get bruised and sweaty and be loud. It's great. :)

And those are the things l like about it--that they go for it, but have this enormous respect for one other, and treat it as a shared experience. There's something really powerful in there somewhere.
