April 4--Too early for magnolia blossoms

My grandfather had a favorite tree in Marin County. It was a 100+ year old Magnolia in the grounds of the Art and Garden Center, which used to be someone's estate. He used to like to take the white magnolia petals and write on them, then hide them away in a book. The white blossoms would become like leather, and the writing would turn to gold. It was kind of magical.

That tree died a while back, and where it stood, is now a ring of Magnolias. I'm not sure if they are descended from the original tree, but I am guessing they are. Together, they are about as big as the original tree was.
