May 6--Carnival!

Every year our city has a Western Festival. It starts with a parade, which I almost always miss, but we like to walk over to the park to see what is going on. One of the great things about where we live is the big park that is about a half mile walk from our house. They have big events a number of times throughout the year. We always decide to walk over and have lunch from the food vendors.

We have to walk through the rides and carnival section to get to the food vendors and exhibitor tables. When I was a kid I was fascinated when the carnival came to our town and set up shop in the vacant lot next to the little league fields. Not so much the rides, but the carnival culture. Guys with tattoos before everyone had tattoos.

Malida opted for the lumpia first, then discovered a place that was selling Hmong food, and got the Hmong sausage and sticky rice. While we were hanging around the Hmong place, I mentioned that I wanted to meet our new mayor, who is Hmong. One of his assistants was standing next to me, and called the mayor to come over and meet me.

We ended up talking for about 45 minutes. He was very knowledgeable about the prevalence of diabetes in the Hmong community, and talked about his father, who died from complications of diabetes. He gave me his card and told me to call if there was anything he could do to help me. His assistant later came up and gave me his own card, and told me I would be more likely to get help from him than the mayor, as he was the guy who did stuff. lol

I had a corn dog, and felt like I had fulfilled my carnival obligations. It was a nice day.
