Decembe 29--Putah Creek

I found a new place to walk today. I wanted something different, and found a spot about a half-hour away, near the UC Davis campus. It is along a creek that runs through the area. I was familiar with the creek, but not the trail. So I headed out to take a walk.

Putah Creek

The trail runs along the north side of the creek for about 6 miles. I did about 2.5 miles out and the same 2.5 back. All the land on this side is owned by the university, and they have all sorts of agricultural things going on, primarily relating to viticulture. They also manage the creek and study the wildlife in the area. It's a pretty good deal.

The trail dips down to follow the creek for a while, and then heads to higher ground. Every mile or so there are areas with picnic tables, and one area had a huge stone fire pit. I imagine big gatherings of university students sitting around the fire.

I didn't see a lot of birds, but I heard them. I did see a couple of egrets, but they were too far off to get a good picture. I also saw a couple of river otters playing around. Like the ones in our creek, they kept peeking at me from behind tree branches. I must fascinate otters.

I did manage to photograph a curious squirrel in a branch above me. I like squirrels. They are non-threatening and relatively friendly.

rope swing

A rope swing over a deep spot in the creek. I want to come back in the summer and photograph people jumping into the water from the swing.

The trail. I posted this on Facebook and one of my friends from high school observed that even though it was a cold day, this picture felt warm. It was actually a beautiful day. It started out in the low 50s, but by the time I was done walking, it was the low 60s.

I like finding new places.
