January 3--With a lonesome train whistle in the background.

Someone who commented on my yesterday post noted that my brother-in-law wasn't smiling. He's kind of quiet, but does smile.

Here is his characteristic open-fingered wave.

My nephew is 21. When he was 13, he looked like a geeky kid. By the time he was 15, he looked 26 and quite handsome. It was kind of a remarkable transformation.

I didn't do much today. I tried to get a little more sleep after Malida left for work, and the next thing I knew it was 10:30. I guess I needed the sleep. After I got up, put the stuff together for some blackeye peas with ham hocks. I forgot to soak the beans, so I prepared it in my electronic pressure cooker. Took about an hour total, and the beans were delicious.

Once the beans were done, I headed down to a winery in Clarksburg to pick up our wine club selection. All the vines have been trimmed back to prepare for the spring.

I came home and cleaned the kitchen, then watched tv. It was raining a bit, so I didn't take a walk. I will have to walk double tomorrow I guess.

I think I am bummed that I have to go back to work in a week. I have really enjoyed this time off, and done so much. I will have to start looking forward to spring break.
