October 22--Chili Size

We had a lovely weekend traversing the Sierras in search of fall color. We headed out Saturday morning at about 7:30 and had a hearty breakfast on the road, at Cooks Station, where we like to eat when we are up that way.

We wandered all over the place, down dirt roads to small isolated lakes, along streams, and wherever else we decided to look. We found aspens in various stages of turning, from bright yellow, to orange, to bare.

I came across a number of people out and about, and everyone seemed friendly and talkative. I talked with a couple from Canada who were on a road trip and making their way back to Ontario. I told them a bit about the area. I talked to another guy who was waiting to row across Kirkwood Lake to close up his friend's cabin for the winter. I found another woman who was trespassing in a field to photograph a stand of aspens, as I trespassed into the same field. She noted that the previous week was probably the week to be up there, as a number of the trees had already lost their leaves. She was right, but there was still plenty to see.

We crossed over the pass and ended up on the east side of the Sierras around mid-afternoon, as the sun backlit the stands to the west of us. We got to our room at about 4, and rested for a while before going out to eat. The plan was to go down to Mono Lake to see the sunset, but we were worn out, and we stayed in and went to bed early after our diner meal.

We got up early Sunday morning and headed up to a place I had seen on my last trip, up the pass a bit above Lee Vining. It was cold out--about 30 degrees, but we walked around all over the area looking at the trees and listening to the birds wake up.

We did pretty much the same thing going home as we did coming over--looked for little out-of-the-way spots with some trees. We had lunch in Bridgeport, then headed back over Sonora Pass to make our way back home. We got home at about 4, pretty worn out. I went to bed at 8 and slept all the way through until 5 am. It was a great weekend.

I think this is my favorite so far, though I haven't yet looked at any of the stuff I shot yesterday. I'm not sure when I will get a chance to really take a look, as I have a busy day today, and then I am off to San Diego for a conference after my lecture tomorrow. I may be posting fall color pictures all through the winter!
