January 4--Those hazy days of winter

from before

Not today, and not a day like today. It was kind of foggy this morning, but no rain for a while now. Back in 2008, when this picture was taken, we were in the midst of some huge storms--the kind where people rush out to the store and stock up on bread and milk. I went out to the store that day, after taking this picture, and bought some stuff to make my own bread. I forgot to look at the entry for the next day to see how it turned out, but I am sure it was delicious.

I only took one picture today, and it was kind of a non-starter, so I took a look back in the archives. One of the great things about having done this since 2002 is that I have a lot of choices when it comes to drawing from my archives. And it's always interesting to see what was going on back then.

I had meant to take some pictures today, but pretty much everything I planned to do today got sidetracked by distractions. Finally I just kind of gave up and came home to take a nap, but was distracted by something on my phone, and even that didn't happen.

I was looking at this picture and thinking about the passage of time. The tree out the window is long gone, and has been replaced by some other trees. All the houses that you can see out the window are different colors now. That clock on the left stopped working last year. The computer stopped working years ago, and it was the replacement for the other computer, which is sitting off to the right of it. I don't put things on CDs or DVDs anymore, but back then, that was how I backed up my photos. I still have the little Buddha, but he's sitting on a table now. Those blinds are gone, replaced by some shutters, just a few weeks ago.

I am reminded that I now back up all my photos and stuff on external drives. Whenever we leave for a few days, I disconnect those drives and put them somewhere else, so that if someone breaks in and steals my computer, I will still have my drives. I did that before we went off to Yosemite, and now I can't remember where I put them. I've looked all around, but no luck.

It's the second time I've done that--hidden them in a place I couldn't remember. I should just hide them in the same place every time. But I have to be creative, I guess. They'll show up eventually, and I have another backup drive that I bought a few weeks ago, so will use that in the meantime.

I guess that's about it for now. Courage!
