I gave a demonstration in front of the class on how to do it and the critical elements, and then let them practice a bit before watching them do it. It was in the same room where I demonstrated the same skills 25 years ago. We have one of the oldest buildings on campus. When we eventually get a new building, I will maybe shed a tear, but gladly move on.
One of the cool things about checking each student off individually is that I get to meet each one of them. I spend a lot of time with my group, which is a third of the class, but don't really interact with the others except in lecture. As they were demonstrating their skill, I looked at their faces and tried to memorize their names. Names are hard for me, and it takes me a few weeks just to remember my own group. I decided to try harder this semester.
After I wrote about Facebook here, I ended up posting something there about what I was thinking. Much to my surprise, there were quite a few thoughtful and insightful comments.
I have a needle and I'm not afraid to use it!
Music: Cielito Lindo, performed by Marta Gomez. I've had this one for a while. I pulled it out to pair with something new for Thursday's show. Find this and listen--you will know it, and it will surprise you.
